The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office of Victim Witness Advocacy’s mission is to ensure that victims of crime are treated with fairness, compassion and respect by the criminal justice system as mandated by Paragraph 22, Article 1 of the New Jersey Constitution. To that end, the primary purpose of the Office of Victim Witness Advocacy is to ensure that victims’ rights are protected (Crime Victims Bill of Rights, NJSA 52:4B-36), and that their unique needs are addressed.

The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office of Victim Witness Advocacy is committed to the Special needs of crime victims, survivors and witnesses. In an effort to reduce the trauma and confusion caused by crime, this office offers support and guidance to crime victims or witnesses, and their families.

The Office of Victim Witness Advocacy provides services to assist victims and witnesses in coping with the aftermath of victimization and attempts to make their participation in the criminal justice system less difficult and burdensome.

Services Offered:

  • Information about the criminal justice system and juvenile justice system
  • Information on the status and disposition of the case in which you are involved
  • Crisis intervention and referral to appropriate social service agency
  • Transportation on a case by case basis
  • Information and assistance in applying for compensation from the Victims of Crime Compensation Board (VCCB)
  • Assistance in obtaining restitution through court proceedings for “out-of-pocket” expenses
  • Court accompaniment when necessary
  • Assistance with completing and providing Victim Impact Statement to the court
  • Assistance with childcare when appropriate
  • Provide separate and secure waiting area before and after court appearance
  • Assistance in registering with the New Jersey State Parole Board and notification of anticipated parole eligibility and potential release
  • Notification of defendant’s release from custody or change of custody status, in a case involving a victim of Aggravated sexual assault or sexual assault

Upon request, assist the victim in obtaining a court order requiring the offender to submit to an approved serological test for AIDS or HIV in the event that the offender is formally charged and notify the victim of the offender’s test results.

Statewide Assistance
The New Jersey State Victim Notification Service (VINE) is a service through which victims of crime can use the telephone or Internet to search for information regarding their offender’s custody status and register to receive telephone and e-mail notification when the offender’s custody status changes.
