Inmate found deceased in his cell

Cape May Court House, New Jersey – Cape May County Prosecutor Robert L. Taylor and Cape May County Sheriff Gary Schaffer report that on October 29, 2014 at approximately 3:05 PM an inmate at the Cape May County Correctional Center was discovered by Correction Officers hanging from a sheet inside his cell.

The inmate, identified as Nard Sonsin, a fifty six (56) year old male, was immediately removed from his cell and attempts were made to revive him via lifesaving techniques. Mr. Sonsin was subsequently transported to Cape Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased. Mr. Sonsin’s next of kin have been notified of his death.

Mr. Sonsin was incarcerated at the Cape May County Correctional Center awaiting charges of Receiving Stolen Property, in Cape May County, where bail was set at $25,000.00. He was also charged with being a Fugitive from another Jurisdiction; specifically, Pennsylvania where there was no bail.

This is an on-going investigation by the Major Crimes Unit of the Prosecutor’s Office and the Cape May County Sheriff’s Department. An autopsy by the Sothern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office is pending.
